Rose is thought to be one of the most well-known and popular notes in perfumery. It transcends culture, geography, time and gender. But in so many ways, it is a mysterious and complicated note. Rose oil is one of the most expensive of all fragrance oils. It’s made up of 300 active ingredients.

Not all of them have yet been identified.

The rose’s petals contain its fragrance. It is said it takes between 50-70 rose flowers to relinquish a single drop and it takes up to 60,000 rose blooms to make only one ounce of rose attar.

Once a rose is fully open, the fragrance we smell is different from the rose in bud. The perfume emitted from a rose is at its most intense early in the morning. It’s thought that the scent dissipates as the blooms age.

There is an ancient, meditative practice of stopping to smell the roses because it encourages us to breath deeply and slowly.

The origin, climate and amount of rainfall that year affects the rose perfume, sometimes powdery, sometimes woody, musky, myrrh-y, clove-like and sometimes very fruity.

Around 70% of the rose oil in the world comes from Bulgaria; other significant producers are Turkey, Iran and Morocco, and precious, limited quantities from Grasse.

OSRE and VALA were both designed to showcase how versatile rose can be. It is the note that adds a light touch to VALA’s strong fig and patchouli base and yet it adds earthy depth to OSRE’s citrus and peppery top notes.
